| Shoes for the poor |
| BriefLetter - Issue 15/2009 |

It is hard to believe what was published in a German economic journal recently. A globally operating German shoe manufacturer wants to offer athletic shoes at a very low price to the poor in Bangladesh. One has to ask oneself if this is truly development aid or if it would not be fairer to pay these people decent wages so they could afford to buy their shoes at regular prices. We can only hope that discounters in the First World buy up all those shoes to sell them for a few Euro or dollars on the domestic market of the manufacturer. This would quickly put a stop to this unbelievable and degrading monkey business. |
